Alex Vause
Alex Vause is a fictional character played by Laura Prepon on the Netflix series ''Orange Is the New Black''. She is a love interest of the protagonist Piper Chapman throughout the series. She is a main character in seasons one and three and a recurring character in season two.
==Inspiration==
The character of Vause is loosely based on Cleary Wolters, author of ''Out of Orange''. Cleary was a co-defendant and ex-girlfriend of Piper Kerman, the author of ''Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison'', which led to the Orange is the New Black series. In Kerman's book, Vause is given the name Nora Jansen. In actual fact, Kerman and Wolters did not serve their sentences together with exception of a short period in the care of US Marshals and they did not reunite in prison as depicted in the series. Wolters remarked that "the only similarity between myself and () is my black glasses." However, Alex and Cleary share much more than eye wear. In fact, Alex changes the course of Cleary's life. In 2015, HarperOne released Wolters' memoir entitled ''Out of Orange''. In the first season of the series we see only glimpses of Piper and Alex's story, flashbacks of a seemingly glamorous lifestyle that draws these young women in and ultimately leads them into the seedy
world of prison.The book opens at the bizarre intersection of art and life where Piper, Alex and Cleary's realities converge, and then deep into an intimate look at the international drug conspiracy that seduced, corrupted, and nearly destroyed Piper and Cleary (Alex).
